Topic: MP3 from within Software player

Has anyone figured out a way of using mp3 format files from within Nware???

Obviously ftp has helped with reducing file size of project files but I have a media producer who's media currently sits at over 200MB and no hardware player has been spec'd for this particular part of the system. Im looking at feeding the audio file from an audio server to the Nion over cobranet currently but that is a tedious fix and doesnt really sit well with the proposed and current system configuration.

Anyone with any ideas?

Memory upgrade isn't really an option at this point.

Thx

Re: MP3 from within Software player

The problem is that the mp3 must be uncompressed before it can be processed out as signal.  Have you watched how much CPU clock time your media player is using when playing as song?  And this is on a new 2 core or better processor.  That's the uncompression algorithm running.

We discussed the idea of adding a mp3 player to the device menu right after NION came to full production (back in 2005), but we quickly shelved the idea.  It was decided that a mp3 player would need to be so carefully used in a Project, that it would cause more problems than it solved.  It's just not worth the engineering time to create, or the tech support time to have.  And, just as important, YOUR programming time to get it working.  There are far better solutions available.

Besides, since the 200MB of WAVs will easily fit on the 2 gig Compact Flash, the handful of seconds of time difference between a FTP send of a group of WAV files compared to mp3 files is not that big a deal, is it?

Make it intuitive, never leave them guessing.

Also, if you really MUST use MP3's, you CAN use the nControl as a storage and playback via CobraNet solution. The audio file player on the nControl can playback both mp3's and wav files.

Otherwise, as Fergilicious said, that 200MB of WAV files will fit on your CF card without issue, and using the FTP options means that you can upload and change the files all you want without having to redeploy massive project files.

Saw I never thanked you for your input. Thanks Fellas. I've been working on the Nion system at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi for the last 12 months or so now. ITs a pretty sweet project.
