Topic: NWare 1.6.1 obsolete devices - important note

If you open a project created in a previous version of NWare that contains a CAB 4n device, an "Obsolete Devices" error message will be displayed. This is because CAB 4n devices have been updated in release 1.6.1 and any old CAB 4n devices in your project must be replaced. Make sure you have the previous version of NWare and the latest version installed, and then complete the steps below.

1. Make a copy of the NWare project file.

2. Open the old version of NWare and the new version of NWare. If you have space on your screen, arrange the windows side-by-side.

3. In the old version of NWare:
   a. Open the original project file.
   b. Right-click the first CAB 4n block, and then click Device Properties.

4. In the new version of NWare:
    a. Open the copy of the project file.
    b. Delete the first CAB 4n block.
    c. Drag a new CAB 4n device over to the page.
    d. Change the device properties of the new CAB 4n device so that they match the settings on the device open in the old version of NWare.
    e. Save the project with a new name to differentiate it from the old project.

5. Click the Emulate buttons in both versions of NWare.

6. Open the CAB 4n blocks in both versions of NWare and then change the settings in the new version to match those in the old version.

7. Repeat steps 3b - 6 for the other CAB 4n blocks in the project.

8. In the new version of NWare, save and deploy the project.

Here is another way that just came to mind;

Open your project, using the same version of NWare in which it was created (NWare 1.6.0a or earlier).  Add just one CAB 4n to the project, setting the Device Properties the same as another CAB 4n that you already have in the Project.  You will be using this as a test device, to make sure you understand the process.

Emulate this project.

Open a spreadsheet.  You will need NWare emulating and the spreadsheet running on the same computer at the same time.

In Gesture Mode, select ALL of controls in Slot A of one of the original CAB 4n.  (You can include the bundle number if you want, but you MUST be consistent.  You will not be able to select the LED "connected" indicator, but you don't need this).

Now select "Ctrl c" to copy these values to Window's Clipboard.  Go to the spreadsheet, and "Ctrl v" to paste the values into the spreadsheet.  You will now see how they will lay out in the spreadsheet, so you can now add labeling that will make sense later.

Once you have finished the other slots in this first CAB 4n, open the test CAB 4n and reverse the process.  Confirm that the values are being moved correctly (an error is most often caused by not selecting the EXACT SAME CONTROLS each time).

Now that you understand the process, proceed with copying the values of the other CABs until finished.

Now open the Project in 1.6.1, and delete and replace with new all of the CAB 4n (make sure you match the Device Properties).  Once you have emulate, you can now bring the values from the spreadsheet to the new CABs.

Either Andy's solution or mine will work, you pick which will work better for you.

I take it that "update out of date devices" won't work!
What will be the symptoms of someone moving from 1.6.0a to 1.6.1 with CABs in their file, and not having read this post?

No, "Update" doesn't work, because it is not an updated device.   The CAB device was not merely changed, but rather replaced with a new device.

The Project won't compile until the CABs are deleted, and it is shown as an Error in the Report tab.

Andy has added it to the Release Notes, which "does" update with the newest version Notes when you click on "Update" in the Release Notes.

BTW, the replacement was required so the CAB 4n could embrace Dante.
